5. Current Condition of Space Industry

In recent years, space industry is rapidly expanding centering on the earth observation market using LEO satellites. Space development used to be limited to the national projects, but technological advances enable public sectors and University projects to develop the smaller and cheaper satellites. Now, satellite development can be a hobby. The key driver behind such rapid expansion of space industry is earth observation market, which acquires and utilizes various data of the Earth seem from space.

The range of industries to which the earth observation market can contribute is the primary sector (more sustainable agriculture and fishery), monitoring buildings, financial sectors, climate change, disaster management, etc. These are the essential industries to accelerate the activities related to SDGs and ESG, and thus space development is not just field of the dream, but can be a realistic solution for the social problems.

It’s been a long time since people call space development led by private sectors “New Space” though, it is also true that space industry is just dawn. Yet, investment in space industry hits record in 2020 and study reports that growth of market will keep rapid expansion for next decades.

Then, the question is "why will the exponential growth of market keep going on despite the pandemic around the globe?".
It is because that people have a high expectation as a potential solution to the global social issues, such as global warming, povety, cyber attach, etc. Through the sessions, we are going to explore the solutions in order to realize the future vision (after post-COVID19) described in SDGs or Society5.0 centering on the "issue-driven discussion".
